• Caroline says: This is good stuff...we shouldn't get too excited because mouse MS (EAE) and human MS are very different...animals (pardon the pun). According to this study, in animals with EAE, RegeneRx improved neurological function, reduced inflammatory infiltrates in the brain, and increased oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (a type of stem cell) and mature oligodendrocytes in the brain. I don't know what some of that means, but it sounds groovy to me.

  • Caroline says: UK scientists have found that the human protein galanin, which protects the body's nerve systems, could be a potential MS treatment. I looked up galanin on Wikipedia and did not have anywhere near the scientific prowess required to understand the function of galanin (certainly not enough to try and explain it), but I have posted a link to the Wikipedia definition in the article above if anyone who is smarter than me would like to see it and learn more.

    • Caroline says: I had to read this article more than once to understand what the study was, but I think I've got it: Australian scientists gave mice EAE, the animal equivalent of MS, and then injected them with genetically modified stem cells, resulting in complete remission of their EAE. This is potentially very promising, but human clinical trials won't be possible for quite some time. Before the stem cells can be transplanted, it is necessary to wipe out the immune system of the subject, so the scientists are now looking at other ways to do this.
