    • Caroline says: Merck/EMD Serono's drug oral cladribine for RRMS has failed to receive FDA approval. The drug demonstrates substantial efficacy -- but has a questionable safety profile. Two ongoing cladribine trials (CLARTITY EXTENSION and ORACLE) will conclude at the end of 2011 and mid-2012, and if these demonstrate a desirable safety profile, Serono can re-file with the FDA.

    • Caroline says: This article really resonated with me. For me personally, physical MS symptoms are totally, thankfully, under control. I exercise regularly and have no physical evidence of disability. Cognitive symptoms are a different story entirely, and I find myself struggling with them on a daily basis. I work full time at a very demanding job that requires me to use my brain (blogging at MSNewsToday unfortunately does not pay me a salary). I have adjusted my thinking schematic and thinking processing so that I can capitalize on my strengths -- and have taken organization to a whole new level. For me, these are my weaknesses, and I have found that significant adaptation is necessary. But the important thing is that I am ABLE to adapt, and I can recognize areas that I need rehabilitation. I think this is true for most MS patients as well. I am now curious to see how weather may or may not impact my cognitive fuzziness.

    • Caroline says: This news comes a little too late for those of us who already have MS. I will be more excited about vitamin D when I read about its curative effects of MS...this Australian study looked at people who had a first clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), ie not full-blown MS. It found that the rate of conversion to clinically definite MS was lower in those patients who got their vitamin D through sunlight, diet, and supplement use than in those who had less vitamin D.

    • Caroline says: The FDA is currently reviewing cladribine (in the US it will be marketed by Serono/Pfizer), and a decision will be made about whether the drug will be approved in the US Feb 28, 2011. Apologies for the Wall Street Journal re-post, I think to view the link a log in is required but I didn't see this anywhere else. It will no doubt hit the blogs later today, when more information is available.
