Author JK Rowling has been a long time supporter of the UK MS Society, and her latest £10 million gift to set up a clinic to research treatments there for MS and other neurodegenerative diseases represents the largest single gift the University of Edinburgh has ever received. Cheers to you, JK Rowling.

      • Caroline says: I don't really like this article for the generalizations it makes. However, I do think it is important to address depression and MS, since it is a pretty ubiquitous issue. This study found that the hippocampus (the part of your brain responsible for long-term memory) in PWMS is smaller than in those without MS.

        • Caroline says: I've posted on this topic in the past, and I will say again that I know of absolutely no clinical evidence that diet provides a curative effect on MS. That said, I am more compelled to post this story simply for the fact that clean eating and exercise can prevent all sorts of issues down the line and, in theory less toxin exposure equals a more stable and calm immune system. I think probably every human on this planet, not just PWMS, can benefit from changing their diet a little (or a lot). Personally I find the idea of giving up sugar (even wine, folks) quite frightening.

              • Caroline says: This is science that is totally out of my realm of understanding (or coherently commenting on)...so, the MS Society's response will have to suffice: "There is insufficient evidence to suggest that this phenomenon is the cause of MS." Nuff said, I suppose. Read it and decide for yourself.

                • Caroline says: It is refreshing to see a potential MS treatment that naturally occurs in food. Not that drugs don't help, of course. But they're drugs, and it's not great to be on a lot of them at once. To my knowledge, studies on luteolin have not been undertaken on PWMS. But, it is abundant in foods like parsley, artichoke, basil, and celery.

                  • Caroline says: Sorry folks...the ECTRIMS data is trickling in slowly, namely because the conference hasn't happened yet. Please stay tuned! Anyway, according to this article, 65% of MS pts experience some form of cognitive dysfunction daily. These data show that brain games (rehabilitative therapy) help cognitive function in PWMS. The games are fun, really -- I posted about this awhile back.

                    • Caroline says: According to this article, people with MS should NOT get their flu vaccine in the form of the inhaled version, FluMist. It is recommended that people with MS get flu shots, but not via FluMist. According to this article, the difference is that flu shots are made with inactive virus and FluMist is made with Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV), meaning that PWMS could potentially expose themselves to the flu by receiving FluMist.

                      • Caroline says: I found a loophole in the "smoking worsens MS" argument. A study found that while cigarette smoking increases disability in patients with MS as well as increases the risk for developing MS in genetically susceptible people, this was not so in Swedish smokers -- or those who used Swedish snuff. This suggests that tobacco is not the cause of MS worsening, but some other chemical or substance found in snuff.
